17 Suspected Pirates Handed Over to Kenya
17 Suspected Pirates Handed Over to Kenya
The US navy handed over 17 suspected pirates to Kenyan police on Wednesday. This brings the number of seaborne gunmen in jail in coastal towns in the east African country to 111. Somali gangs in small boats are challenging the world's military powers with ever more daring strikes along major trade routes. Operations are expanding towards the coast of Kenya and the Seychelles islands. International navies patrolling the busy shipping lanes are reluctant to bring suspects to their own countries because they either lack the jurisdiction to do so or fear the Somalis may seek asylum. [Ayub Gitonga, Kenya Ports Police Chief]: "The suspects are 17 and they were arrested on May 13 2009. They had attacked a merchant ship "MV Amira." The merchant ship was sailing to Alexandria in Egypt when it was attacked by the small ship and a skiff. "USS Gettysburg" came to its rescue and they managed to arrest the 17 suspects." Pirates from lawless Somalia present a legal and diplomatic challenge as well as a military one. Some of them say they turned to hijacking and hostage-taking because overfishing has deprived them of their traditional livelihood Kenya has agreed to deal with the detainees under accords with the European Union, Britain and the United States, but it has said it cannot try all pirates. In a move to try and ease any backlogs in hearings, police say the 17 would be charged in a Malindi court, 120 kilometers away from Mombasa.

Patrick Ndunda, Criminal Identification Bureau, KENYA
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of attacks on vessels by pirates, in particular in the Gulf of Aden, Somali Basin and the Indian Ocean. Vast areas of waters are affected making it a challenge to prevent maritime piracy incidents. For more information, visit: www.interpol.int Maritime piracy affects major shipping lanes, and puts at risk the lives of seafarers and merchant seamen from all over the world, of whom hundreds are taken captive each year. Millions of dollars in ransom payments are paid to pirates. It is believed that these payments are divided between the pirates, their leaders and those who finance them. Intelligence indicates that part of the money is reinvested abroad through Somali emigrants. Tracing the financial flows of ransom money is one of the main challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.

Trading Places - The Merchants of Nairobi - A book by Steve Bloom
More info at www.stevebloomphoto.com Photographer Steve Bloom makes a fascinating journey into the world of Nairobi and its shopkeepers. In this film he discusses what inspired him to write and photograph his book, Trading Places - The Merchants of Nairobi. This photographic portrait of the merchants of Nairobi offers an encounter with a community rarely glimpsed by outsiders. Steve Bloom has ventured away from the centre of this dynamic African metropolis into neighbourhoods where malls and supermarkets have not yet penetrated. Here people buy their daily necessities locally, from small traders in their communities. Shopkeepers decorate their hoardings with hand-painted signs. The results are often delightfully quirky an authentic form of popular street graphics. Store façades are painted with images of goods of all kinds, from light bulbs to cuts of meat. Affirmative messages abound. Beauty is your birthright proclaims the Eclipse Hair Salon. Never give up, urges the Bora-Bora Bar; Life continues. More than one shack hotel wittily declares itself Hotel Hilton. Ghetto life is not easy says the façade of Abdalla Store. Indeed not: life here is very hard. Yet in frank interviews, ordinary Kenyans display extraordinary goodness and charity. Their priorities are faith, family, love and community. This book is a tribute to the creativity and generosity of the human spirit. It is also timely, for it depicts a world that is changing fast. Hand-painted hoardings are rapidly ...

Kenya Green Tourmaline
Kenya Green Tourmaline
There's always that package that gives you a "rush" as you open it. Stunning color, eye clean!!! A rare eye clean Green Tourmaline collection. A word or two about Green Tourmaline: gemstone.org The tourmaline is a unique miracle of colour. The gemstone comes in green, red, blue, yellow, but there are also colourless specimens and black ones. Often two or more colours are found in a single tourmaline crystal. Also rare and very highly esteemed are tourmalines which appear to change their colour and cat's eye tourmalines. Having said all that, green is regarded as the classical tourmaline colour. If you ask a gemstone merchant about a tourmaline, green, in most cases, is the first colour he will think of. However, even among the green tourmalines there is a broad spectrum. Some of them are very light, others so dark that the green colour can only be recognised when the stone is held against the light. There are green tourmalines in fine leek hues, but also in intense yellowish-green, olive green and brownish-green nuances. And there are especially wonderful tourmalines in the range from blue-green to dark bottle-green. These, indeed, are its best colours. They are rare and much sought-after. Green tourmalines are very popular as precious stones among women, but many men like wearing them too. MV Faina Released from Pirate Captivity
The Ukrainian Merchant Vessel Faina was captured by Somali pirates in September 2008 while carrying 33 T-72 tanks. Some sources said the tanks were bound for Sudanese rebels; the Kenyan government claimed the tanks were ordered by the Kenyan army. Faina's captain died of natural causes while in captivity. In February, the ship was released with its 20 surviving crew and made port in Mombasa, Kenya, where Kenyan officials repeated their assertion that the tanks were bound for Kenya. Colors #81 - Plastic Bottle Boat
Colors #81 - Plastic Bottle Boat
For over a thousand years, the port of Lamu, Kenya, traded with the world. Merchant ships would arrive, dock near the city's minarets and palm trees, and leave carrying ivory, mangrove wood and slaves. Then, a century ago, the old trade began to decline, before being gradually replaced by a new one: tourism. Growing up in Lamu, Mansoor, now 31, watched as visitors arrived with money and left behind their trash. Then, one day, he was looking at the discarded plastic along the shoreline and had a revelation: this was a resource, and with it, he would build something everyone in Lamu needed. He would build a boat. www.colorsmagazine.com/stories/magazine/81/story/plastic-bottle-boat
